Position: Full Professor of Applied Mathematics Biography: Prof. Phiri, who was the first Zambian to obtain a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, has been working as a Full Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics at the Copperbelt University since 2011. He has also worked as a Lecturer at the University of Zambia from 1979 to 1982 before moving to the University of Eswatini (Swaziland) where he rose through the Lecturer and Senior Lecturer ranks up to the position of Associate Professor in 1994. In 2002 he moved to South Africa where he worked as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the North West University in Mafikeng. While awaiting appointment to the Copperbelt University, he spent two years (2009 to 2011) teaching at the University of Pretoria. Over the years, Prof. Phiri has done much to improve the status of mathematical sciences in the southern region; this was much more so during the decade 1991 to 2001 when he was the President of the Southern Africa Mathematical Sciences Association (SAMSA). SAMSA, not only sought scholarships for its members but also sought sponsorship for a regional postgraduate programme in mathematics. The programme, which is currently based at the University of Dar es Salaam, has graduated over 100 Masters and over fifty doctorate graduates. Prof. Phiri has also acquired scholarships for Copperbelt University postgraduate students to enable them to carry out research in European universities.
