The Copperbelt University (CBU) Vice Chancellor, Professor Imasiku Nyambe, recently held a series of significant meetings with key civic leaders in Kitwe. This marks his first formal engagement with local leadership since assuming office in May 2024.
Among those he met were Her Worship the Mayor of Kitwe, Ms. Mpasa Mwaya, the District Commissioner of Kitwe, Mr. Lawrence Mwanza; and the Member of Parliament for Kwacha Constituency, Mr. Abel Mulenga.
During these meetings, Professor Nyambe discussed several pressing challenges facing the university, with particular focus on the safety of students residing in boarding houses. He highlighted the recent attacks on students as they travel to and from the campus at night, expressing deep concern over the security risks they face
In his discussions with the leaders, Professor Nyambe emphasized the need for a coordinated effort to enhance the safety and well-being of CBU students and the need for Government to complete the stalled hostels.. He urged the local leadership to collaborate with the university in finding effective solutions to these challenges.
The Member of Parliament for Kwacha Constituency, Mr. Abel Mulenga, responded positively to the Vice Chancellor’s concerns announcing the allocation of funds from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to renovate the roads leading to the university clinic aimed at improving access to medical services for the university community.
Mr. Mulenga further revealed that he is actively advocating with the Government to expedite the completion of the stalled student hostels anticipated to alleviate the accommodation challenges faced by many students, thereby reducing the need for off-campus housing and the associated security risks.
Meanwhile Her Worship the Mayor of Kitwe, Ms. Mpasa Mwaya, and District Commissioner of Kitwe Mr Lawrence Mwanza also expressed commitment to addressing the safety concerns raised by Professor Nyambe.
The civic leaders assured the Vice Chancellor that they will work closely with the university to restore and enhance the safety of students, particularly those residing off-campus.
The Vice Chancellor’s proactive engagement with Kitwe’s civic leadership underscores CBU’s commitment to fostering strong partnerships with local authorities for the benefit of its students and the broader community.
As CBU continues to navigate its challenges, the support and collaboration from Kitwe’s leadership will play a crucial role in ensuring the university remains a safe and conducive environment for academic excellence.
