ZUSA TOURNAMENT KICKS OFF AT CBU

THE Zambia Inter-University sports Tournament organized by the Zambia University Sports Association (ZUSA) kicked off yesterday at the Copperbelt University (CBU) in Kitwe. The four day tournament will run from 5th to 8th March 2020.

Minister of Higher Education Dr Brian Mushimba officially opened the sports tournament and appealed to participants from various Universities to work hard in the different sporting disciplines to attain values of competitive spirit and team work.

Dr Mushimba said government supports physical activities such as sports as they play a pivotal role in the wellbeing of an individual.

There is a strong correlation between participation in physical activities and academic achievement. Research has shown that increasing the time spent on activities in academic institutions improves the ability to learn and retain information thus contributing to academic success.’ He said.

He added that government will support all successful athletes with academic scholarships meant to further their education.

Meanwhile Copperbelt University acting Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr Kawunga Nyirenda said management at the University values sports and recreation activities as they complement the academic life of students.

‘Sports teach team work which students will need to exhibit in their day to day activities therefore the University is committed to ensuring students are exposed to recreation activities. ‘Said Dr Nyirenda.

And ZUSA President Mr. Mwape Nshimbi said he is confident that the tournament will yield positive results and a great team to represent Zambia at the sports tournament in Lesotho.

The 2020 ZUSA tournament comprise various sporting disciplines such as basketball, netball, volleyball, football, rugby, badminton, chess, scrabble and tennis.

The tournament which is held annually attracts participation from various Universities across the country. This year, it has attracted over 10 universities including the Copperbelt University, University of Zambia, Lusaka Apex Medical University, Chalimbana University, Zambia Catholic University, Rock View University, Kapasa Makasa University, Mukuba University and Mulungushi University.
