CBU DEVELOPS PROTOTYPES TO MITIGATE THE SPREAD OF COVID19

The Copperbelt University (CBU) has designed and developed a “Walk-Through” automated body sanitizer in response to its mandate of providing intellectual and practical services aimed at generating interventions that support the national COVID-19 mitigation emergency plans. The Automated Body Sanitizer developed through the School of Engineering, has been built as a full body sanitization mechanism, utilizing the misting technology under a high pressurized fluid supply system.

The prototype is suited for public places and spaces where the one meter social distance rule is violated or not possible such as malls and markets aimed at minimizing the spread of viruses that maybe carried on clothing or body surfaces.

In addition to the automated body sanitizer, the University has developed hand sanitizers, and a procedure to test the viability of sanitizers on the market.

Speaking during the launch of the prototypes held at the Copperbelt University main campus, Minister of Higher Education Dr Brian Mushimba commended the University for its Swift Response in up scaling its research and innovation activities in order to provide solutions to challenges the country is facing.

Dr Mushimba added that government is readily available to support and partner with the University on proactive and innovative solutions offering home grown initiatives.

Meanwhile, CBU Vice Chancellor Professor Naison Ngoma said the university will continue supporting government efforts in the development of technologies to assist in mitigating transmission of COVID-19 infections.

The launch of the prototypes was graced by the Minister of Higher Education Dr Brian Mushimba, Minister Copperbelt Province Mr. Japhen Mwakalombe, Permanent Secretary, Copperbelt Province Mr. Brian Nundwe, Kitwe District Comissioner, Mr Chileshe Bweupe, Mayor of the City of Kitwe Eng Christopher Kangombe and MTN General Manager, Nothern Region, Mr.John Muyawala.
