ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION
Prof. Sumbye Alex Kapena is an Associate Professor in Economics, and current Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences; and former Dean of the School of Business at the Copperbelt University, Zambia. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Zambia obtained in 1983; A Master of Science in Agricultural Economics obtained from Michigan State University (USA) in 1989, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of East Anglia (UK) obtained in 2008.
REASEARCH INTERESTS
Prof. Kapena’s research experience dates back to the mid-1980s when he worked for the Zambian Ministry of Agriculture, Planning Division and since then has conducted research on a wide range of economic issues including economic diversification, effects of global financial crisis on the Zambian economy, Corporate social responsibility in the Zambian mining sector, the effectiveness of the Lima extension programme in Zambia, Vulnerability and Social Protection in Zambia, and In search of Youth Employment model for Zambia.
BRIEF INFORMATION
As a Lecturer he has taught several economics courses including Micro- and Macro-Economic Theory and Policy, Managerial Economics, Public Finance, International Trade and Finance, and Money and Banking. He has served as external examiner for both Zambian Universities and universities in South Africa. He has supervised many graduate students; several of them at PHD level. He has published several peer reviewed papers in worldwide recognized journals, and has presented many conference papers both within Zambian and outside the country. He has authored more than ten books of motivational and entrepreneurship nature, all of them published outside Zambia, including in India. Prof Kapena served for several years as one of the Directors on the Bank of Zambia Monetary Policy Advisory Committee, and is currently a Board Member on the Nkana Water and Sanitation Company, one of the biggest water utilities in Zambia.
