CBU GEOMATICS STUDENTS ENGAGE INDUSTRY EXPERT IN CAREER-SHAPING WEBINAR

The Geomatics Engineering Society (GeoSoc) at Copperbelt University has successfully hosted a career-oriented webinar under the theme ‘Geomatics Pathways and Consultancy’ as part of its ongoing efforts to bridge academic knowledge with practical industry experience.

The virtual event attracted over 80 participants, mostly students pursuing Geomatics Engineering, and featured guest speaker Mr. Ebenezer Odoi, an expert fromGeoNova Labs Ltd, popularly known as ‘EB.’ His presentation centred on career development in the geospatial industry, emphasizing the increasing relevance of geoinformatics in key sectors such as mining, telecommunications, and environmental management.

Speaking during the webinar, Mr Odoi encouraged students to familiarize themselves with essential tools and platforms including ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, Python, and cloud services such as AWS and Azure.

He urged students to build competencies in data processing, visualization, and programming, and to embrace collaborative and agile approaches using platforms like GitHub.

‘Your curriculum already gives you the foundation,’ EB said. ‘But personal initiative, curiosity, and willingness to learn are what will set you apart.’

He advised students aspiring to enter consultancy to initially offer services voluntarily to build experience and credibility, stressing that both technical and interpersonal skills are key to thriving in the evolving geospatial landscape.

The event was graced by the Head of the Geomatics Engineering Department and Patron of the Society, Dr. Levi Mutambo, who applauded the GeoSoc executive for organizing the impactful event. He also commended the students for their active participation and commitment to professional growth.

In a vote of thanks, GeoSoc Vice President, Ms. Rose Mphanza, described the event as a powerful reflection of collaboration, vision, and passion for the field of geomatics. She expressed gratitude to the guest speaker, the department, and the student participants for making the webinar a success.

EB concluded his session by leaving the students with a powerful quote:
‘Set yourself ablaze and let the world watch you burn.’

The webinar aligns with GeoSoc’s broader mission to promote career awareness, student welfare, inter-university collaboration, and community outreach through academic-industry engagement.
