Public Health Department
Overview
The Public Health Unit (PHU) provides continuous training to medical and dental students from first to fifth year, focusing on public health principles, epidemiology, health programme management, teamwork, and rural health practice. Its mission is to promote healthy communities through teaching, with a vision of becoming a centre of excellence in research and training.
Students gain practical and theoretical competencies through lectures and Community-Based Education (CBE) in both rural and urban settings, including communities, health facilities, schools, and industries. The curriculum covers key areas such as epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, nutrition, communicable and non-communicable diseases, and research methods.
Research training begins in the third year, with students undertaking supervised projects, while staff conduct research in areas including infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and adolescent substance abuse.
