  1. SAWMILL TECHNICIAN – 01 Position

Job Purpose

To provide leadership, plan and coordinate the day-to-day running of the training sawmill ensuring quality performance, to ensure sustainable utilisation and management of the training compartment.

The Sawmill Technician will report to the Head of Department for Biomaterial Science & Technology attached to the Sawmill Project

Main Duties/ Responsibilities

  • Develop and Implement the annual work plans in line with the Departmental strategic plan.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of workers engaged in logging and sawmilling operations.
  • Develop and Implement a sawmill machinery maintenance plan in close consultation with though the Head of Department.
  • Develop value-addition products at the Sawmill and ensure effective running of the Sawmill

  • Inspect materials during and after processing to determine that dimensions and grade, meet specifications.
  • Direct workers to adjust machine setup or processing procedure to meet production requirements, improve conversion efficiency and correct defects.
  • Inspect, grade, scale and tally incoming and outgoing timber and verify associated documentation.
  • Evaluate the performance of workers and recommended appropriate work skills remediation and development.
  • Advise the Head of Department on the development and delivery of field practical training programs and industrial short courses.
  • Actively participate in research activities of academic staff and students.
  • Perform practical demonstration following instructions in a practical training manual.

Professional Qualifications and Requirements

  • Grade Twelve Certificate with five credits including English and Mathematics.
  • Minimum of a Diploma in Forestry and Sawmilling or any other relevant qualification from a recognised institution.
  • A minimum of 3 years working experience is required.

2. PLANT PROPAGATION TECHNICIAN – 01 Position

Job Purpose

The Propagation Technician will coordinate daily activities in plant propagation and nursery management. The Propagation Technician efficiently and effectively cares and propagates the plants to ensure they are at optimum health to provide a high-quality product to our clients.

The Plant Propagation Technician will report to the Head of Department for Plant and Environmental Sciences (PES) attached to the Kamfinsa Horticulture Project.

Main Duties / Responsibilities

  • To determine the proper techniques, timings, required pre-treatments, appropriate growing media, container usage, and/or any other specialized requirements in preparation for propagation takes place in a timely and coordinated manner
  • Conduct daily care and maintenance of plants from seed to harvest.
  • The appropriate irrigation, weeding, fertilizing, pruning, sanitation, and pest control propagation stock.
  • Proper spacing, air circulation, and sun/shade exposure is monitored and adjusted promptly and is effective in maintaining plants in optimum health.
  • Maintaining the highest levels of cleanliness and sterility inside the production area and facility at all times, including routine cleaning and sterilization of equipment and infrastructure
  • Monitor and Report Pest and disease to Plant Health Specialist.
  • Use, maintain and operate equipment in the facility.
  • Learn and follow protocols for plant systems and lab support.
  • Take instruction and assist with tasks delegated by the management team.
  • Participate in harvest and processing if needed.
  • Ensure the daily compliance policies are followed, but not limited to compliance with the state, security protocols, access protocols and dress code.
  • Develop and Implement the annual work plans in line with the Departmental and University strategic plan.

3. LIVESTOCK TECHNICIAN – 01 POSITION

Job Purpose

The Livestock Technician will help with coordinating the daily activities in animal management. The Technician’s main duty will be to efficiently and effectively care for livestock to ensure they are at optimum health to provide high-quality products to our clients.

The Livestock Technician will report to the Head of Department for Zoology and Aquatic Sciences (ZAS)    

Main Duties/ Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations and maintenance of the livestock and related facilities
  • Design, construct and maintain livestock production systems and equipment
  • Serve as a lead worker; assist students and faculty with classes and projects
  • Maintain a proper inventory of livestock, feed, tools, and supplies
  • To support and perform the daily care of the livestock; provide work direction to the students; provides technical assistance concerning livestock management to faculty and students
  • Perform and direct others in the routine health care, feeding, watering, breeding and harvest of all livestock; work directly with livestock specialist and veterinarians to provide and administer prescribed treatments.
  • Operate, maintain and repair a variety of small tools and large equipment, such as tagging, docking and breeding tools.
  • Implement and maintain pasture management plans that include irrigation, fertilization and weed control procedures.
  • Provide laboratory and classroom assistance concerning livestock management to faculty and students.
  • Evaluate livestock for training, class utilization, purchase or donation.
  • Maintain record-keeping systems, including livestock inventory, feed records, breeding and health records.
  • Provide technical support, technical information and serve as a resource for livestock sales, livestock transport, public tours and department activities.
  • Coordinate assistance from approved livestock service vendors, such as veterinarians and feed suppliers.
  • Monitor and Report diseases to the HOD -ZAS

4. FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE TECHNICIAN – 01 POSITION

Job Purpose

  • The Fisheries and Aquaculture Technician help with coordinating the daily activities in fish pond management and aquaculture activities. The role will serve as a lead worker, support and perform the daily fish management in ponds provide technical assistance concerning  fisheries management to faculty and students

The Fisheries and Aquaculture Technician will report to the Head of Department for Zoology and Aquatic Sciences attached to the Project.    

Main Duties / Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations and maintenance of fish ponds, fish management and related facilities
  • Design, construct and maintain fish production systems and equipment
  • Assist students and faculty with classes and projects; and maintain a proper inventory of livestock, feed, tools, and supplies; perform other related duties.
  • Perform and direct others in the routine health care, feeding breeding and harvest of all fish; works directly with fisheries experts in the School and veterinarians to provide and administer prescribed treatments.
  • Collect and organize fish data collected when managing fish in the ponds and frequently analyse the quality of water in the ponds to ensure proper disease management
  • Use appropriate feed and feeding practices.
  • Support aquaculture fish rearing activities including feeding, grading, sampling, harvesting, sorting, handling, and transporting fish. Monitor the status of facility systems and equipment. Assist in the maintenance and cleaning of systems and tanks.
  • Make regular facility inspections including, for example, pumps, motors, blowers, diffusers, drains, tanks, filters, feeders, and related equipment.
  • Monitor and maintain water quality levels. Record findings and adjustments made. Respond appropriately and immediately to emergencies
  • Monitor and report fish diseases to the Head of Department for Zoology and Aquatic Sciences
