CBU TO COMPLETE 6000 BED SPACE HOSTELS Ministry of Higher Education Minister Dr Brian Mushimba has commended the Copperbelt University Management for their focus on improving the quality of Education through infrastructure development. Dr Mushimba who was on a familiarization tour of the University encouraged Management to continue with the good works and that government would help where it could. He said the construction of the additional 6000 bed spaces would help cushion squatting challenges at the University. ‘The Government attaches great importance to supporting higher education through infrastructure development. I will work towards completing the construction of these hostels so that inadequate accommodation is stripped off completely.’ He said. Dr Mushimba added that there was need to maximize on the bed spaces and avoid overcrowding which has created an unhealthy environment for students. The Copperbelt University was closed indefinitely in April 2019 by the then Minister of Higher Education Professor Nkandu Luo following riots by students. The University was later reopened on 19th August 2019 by the current Minister Dr Brian Mushimba who has cautioned the students to refrain from violent behavior and use proper channels to air their grievances. Some students have described the reopening as a relief. Raphael Mukulusha said in an interview that the four month break had helped the students to reflect on their behavior and ensure they changed for the better. He thanked Higher Education Minister Dr Brian Mushimba for forgiving the students and pledged to always seek right channels to air their grievances. Copperbelt University Vice Chancellor Professor Naison Ngoma urged students not to take the law into their own hands as this was sending a bad signal to the outside world. He said Management is working closely with students to ensure they have a conducive learning environment

On 19th August, 2019, the CBU delegation paid a courtesy call on Mr Evaristo D Kusunga – the Deputy High Commissioner to Canada. The Deputy High Commissioner welcomed the delegation and informed the delegation the mission had made necessary contacts with various Universities and organizations to which CBU would make linkages as ITNM pursues its mandate. The council Chair and the Vice Chancellor both shared the vision of the University, such as investment opportunities that CBU would want to partner with potential organizations in business ventures and research.

The Copperbelt University has scooped the most supporting institution award at the 2019 labor day celebrations. The institution has also recognized and awarded 26 members of staff in various categories for their exemplary work, each awardee walks away with 4500 kwacha.
