On Saturday the 29th of April 2023, the Copperbelt University Civil Engineering Student Society (CivSoc) undertook a project to re-paint and re-mark the faded zebra crossing on campus. The initiative, aimed at enhancing safety for all campus users, was a huge success, as the students put in their best effort to ensure a high-quality job was delivered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the project’s primary objective, CivSoc leveraged the opportunity to demonstrate the importance of practical learning in a university setting. As modern education continues to emphasize the relevance of hands-on learning, CivSoc’s efforts provided an ideal platform for the students to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world situations. Moreover, the project allowed the students to develop essential skills, including teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving – which are critical competencies for professionals in the engineering field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CivSoc also used the project to advocate for increased student involvement in the university’s various projects. CivSoc President Ganizani Zulu, speaking on the initiative, emphasized the importance of practical learning in a university setting. He noted that while classroom knowledge is essential, it is the practical application of that knowledge that helps students develop skills and competencies critical for their future careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We need to encourage more student involvement in university projects,” Zulu said. “These projects provide a platform for students to apply what they learn in class to real-world situations, develop practical skills, and cultivate a sense of responsibility and ownership that will not only make our university better but society too.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project’s success is a testament to CivSoc’s commitment to promoting safety and practical learning in the university. We hope that the initiative will inspire other student societies and individuals to undertake similar projects in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
