The formation of the Chair followed the initiative conceived by the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Zambia that would commemorate Dag Hammarskjold and his work in an active and ongoing manner apart from the annual Memorial Commemorations. This initiative culminated into the formation of the Dag Hammarskj\u00f6ld Living Memorial Initiative (DHLMI) which was collaborative project between the UNCT, the Zambian Government, the Swedish and Nordic Missions in Zambia and the Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation (MEF). The dimensions of the DHLMI are:<\/p><ul><li>Improvements to the Dag Memorial Crush Site;<\/li><li>Dag Hammarskj\u00f6ld Messengers of Peace Training Programme; and<\/li><li>The Dag Hammarskj\u00f6ld Center for Peace, Good Governance and Human Rights at Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation<\/li><\/ul><p>The Copperbelt University\u2019s Dag Hammarskjold Chair for Peace and Conflict Studies, is the fourth dimension of DHLMI and has the following components:<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-14b1c71 elementor-tabs-view-horizontal elementor-widget elementor-widget-tabs\" data-id=\"14b1c71\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"tabs.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2162\" aria-expanded=\"false\">COMPONENT 2<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2162\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2162\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><p>To carry out in depth research and studies on Zambia\u2019s role in Sub-Regional, Regional and International Peace Negotiations, including Zambia\u2019s active role in UN Peace Keeping and Electoral Observer Missions Abroad;<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2163\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2163\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><p>To conduct research in the Triangular Areas of Human Rights, Environment and Sustainable Development as presented to the WSSD by Mary Robinson and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Klaus Topfer;<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2164\" aria-expanded=\"false\">COMPONENT 4<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2164\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2164\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><p>To provide integral linkage of the Chair with other programmes and dimensions of the DHLMI such as refuge dimensions and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). The Chair shall receive Research Students and Fellows from Abroad for participation in the programmes of the Chair and DHLMI as whole.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"5\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2165\" aria-expanded=\"false\">COMPONENT 5<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2165\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"5\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2165\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><p>To carry out research and conduct workshops in order for the Chair to define conflict and recognize conflict management as a combination of dispute prevention and dispute resolution.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b51963 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3b51963\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Chair was mandated to teach, conduct research, information dissemination and outreach programmes to other Institutions in Zambia. In this regard, tentative discussions have been entered into with related Institutions like the <strong>Defense Services Command and Staff College<\/strong> in Lusaka who have expressed interest in collaborating with the Copperbelt University in Peace and Conflict Studies at Master\u2019s Degree level. This is a Regional College under the Ministry of Defense and it trains students from the Region and Abroad in Peace, Security and Defense related matters though not at degree level.\u00a0 Further other Institutions like the <strong>Institute for Security Studies (ISS)<\/strong> in South Africa would like to explore ways in which there could be staff and student exchanges between CBU and ISS. The ISS is a world renowned Institute in Security Studies.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section training and develop peacebuilding materials for schools and higherinstitutions of learning,<\/li><li>Serve as advisors on peace and conflict related matters to public, private and SYSTEM<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2362\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"region\" obtain a Grade Point Average of 2.5 at the end of the 2 (two) semesters will proceed to the dissertation stage in the third semester. A student is given six months to undertake a research related to Peace and Conflict within their given field. At the end of six months, the student shall submit his\/her thesis to the Head of Department, Postgraduate Studies. There will be two presentation periods a year, at six monthly intervals after the completion of the third stage. The thesis shall be examined by a committee consisting of 3 examiners, of who two (2) should be internal and one external. The grading of the thesis will be done according to the set criteria giving a maximum of 50 points. The Grade for the thesis shall be Pass or Fail. In the case of a Fail, the student will be permitted to submit a new dissertation in the next presentation period. Only two submissions shall be permitted. However, the nature of the Institute\u2019s work requires that it also assume some peculiarities in its make-up to meet the demands of think tanks. The broader emphasis on research components such as the strategic studies cell is a case in point. Consequently the governance structure for the Institute comprises of an Advisory Board; Board of Studies; Post-Graduate Committee; Research Committee; and an Executive Committee\/Promotions and Appointments Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The Director provides both strategic and operational leadership for the Institute. A Board of Studies assists the Executive Committee; Research Committee; which meets once per term or as required. The Executive Committee assisted by a Board of Studies; Research Committee meets once per semester or as required.<\/p>\n<p>The Advisory Board meets once per year or as required.
